Alex - Studium/Punctum
This image by Juliana Beasley really stuck out to me because of the disorienting factor of child's legs without a body. The image has a fairly frightening effect because it isn't what one would expect to see. The picture has an eerie feeling to it, making the viewer feel relatively uncomfortable. This feeling is the studium, as society expects anything related to childhood to be nice and innocent. The punctum within the photo is the cloth that covers the top of the legs, as it gives the impression that a body should be there, or that this cloth is some sort of dress without a body to cover.

This a very cool and very disturbing picture at the same time, which makes it very interesting.

I like the studium, very interesting, but the punctum for me is the liter bottle next to the legs. I think this is the same with a lot of the photos here, the subject is so strange and scary I tend to focus on the simple things to get oriented.

ReplyDeletethis photo totally freaks me out--interesting choice! i agree with what was said about the studium, but as far as punctum is concerned i don't feel as if the cloth is the punctum, as much as the absence of the body is. i understand you were conveying the absence of the body as part of what makes the cloth eerie, but i believe the fact that the "body" stops at the knees is the crucial point which draws in the viewer. nice choice of photo.
